Frequently Asked Questions - Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) FAQs

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is the medical name for ear surgery which is the plastic surgery procedure intended to improve the size or shape of a patient’s ears.

How is ear surgery performed?

Ear surgery starts with an incision to the back and or front of the ear. The plastic surgeon will reshape and size the cartilage of the patient’s ears. Often times a surgeon will suture the patient’s ears closer to the head in order to reduce a protruding look. This is referred to as “pinning back” the ears. After the shaping and sizing is complete, the plastic surgeon will then close any open incisions, usually with absorbable sutures. Otoplasty can sometimes be done in conjunction with other facial surgeries including a brow lift, face lift and chin implants.

Does ear surgery leave scars?

Yes, but they are very hard to detect. Most incisions are to the back of the ear which can only be seen if someone was to physically pull forward your ear and look behind it. Any incisions that are made to the front of the ear are hidden in the natural folds.

Can I lose my hearing with ear surgery?

Loss of hearing is extremely rare. Consult with your otoplasty surgeon about any risks that may be involved with the surgery before going through with the operation.

How much does ear surgery cost?

Usually the cost can range anywhere from $3,500-$8,000 when all fees are incorporated.
